Garden of Earthly Delights

Hieronymus Bosch rediscovered

In one of his paintings “The Garden of Earthly Delights” the backside of one of the damned is marked with musical notes. Listen to this “music from hell” and visit a sensational online exhibition of Bosch’s most famous paintings.

Have you ever noticed the musical notes tattooed on some unfortunate soul in Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights”?
Bosch’s nearly 500 year old page of music is now playable thanks to “Amelie”, a sharp-eyed college student of Music and Information Science at the Oklahoma Christian University. You can listen to it here.

Bosch, garden eartly delights, Butt Song from Hell

Famous for exposures loaded with symbolic imagery, Bosch painted the “Garden of Earthly Delights” around the turn of the 15th century. Art historians and critics frequently interpret the painting as a didactic warning on the perils of life’s temptations. In the right part of the picture he depicts musical hell, although the “music” might be considered somewhat mellow.

As Hyperallergic‘s Allison Meier reported on Friday, “The Butt Song from Hell” is spreading like fire over the internet. Amelie can’t believe the attention the song has received. Now there are several different versions online – one of the best, here.

On the occasion of this discovery, SandboxGallery is dedicating a virtual exhibition to the painter Bosch, uniting his most famous paintings in one single exhibition hall. Normally a museum would never be able to stage such an exhibtion due to the tremendous value and fragility of the original paintings. But you can visit this unique Bosch exhibition here – in 3D.

Did you know that you can create your own virtual exhibition? SandboxGallery provides artists, photographers, galleries and museums with a sensational 3D experience. Learn how to curate, showcase, promote, and sell your works online, or discover more exhibitions uploaded by artists from all over the world.
